Mazatlán, Sinaloa, February 1, 2024.- Excited, nervous and surprised, fine artist Tonatiuh Salcedo Rodríguez, from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, received an acquisition prize of 70 thousand pesos for having obtained first place in the XXIII edition of the Antonio López Sáenz Biennial Prize for Fine Arts.

And in his second participation with the piece “Acotar para stratify territoriality”, the Mochiteco took the place of honor, but admitted that when making the decision to participate his hope was not to win, only that his piece would be exhibited, for which the result exceeded any expectations, since in his career he had not yet had a result of this magnitude.

“It surprises me, first of all, I didn’t expect to win any prize, the hope was to be in the biennial, and it took me by surprise. It is very exciting to receive the first prize and also very important.

Have you won something similar?

“Not that first place, but other competitions, and scholarships at the state level,” he declared.

He assures that this piece has a special value, since in it he portrays something important about the region from his perspective.

“It is a visual section that we are seeing, it is a small installation that, made with graphite, charcoal and acrylic, is based on the landscape, let’s say of the construction of a symbol, a milestone in the Sinaloa landscape, and that in the end ends being the identity of our state or region,” he said.
It took approximately a week to build this piece, which from the jury’s point of view constitutes a three-dimensional piece with a geometric abstraction, endowed with great management of composition and use of light and depth.
With the award obtained, the artist Tonatiuh Salcedo Rodríguez has the moral commitment to make this piece larger, which he will be able to do thanks to the financial amount he received and hopes that it will be exhibited in an important place in the state.
