Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Sinaloa, February 1, 2024.- A great awards night was held at Casa Haas last Wednesday during the opening of the collective exhibition of the “Antonio López Sáenz” Biennial Prize for Fine Arts, where the winners of the First places received their recognition and acquisition prize in the presence of family and friends.

As part of the activities of Carnaval Internacional de Mazatlán 2024 “Baroque Eclipse”, SGM Carolina III, Queen of Carnaval and SGM Siu Ling I, Queen of the Floral Games, presided over this special night and were in charge of awarding the different awards.

Enrique Vega Ayala, Director of Planning of the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán, led the ceremony and narrated the beginnings of this contest dedicated to the Fine and Visual Arts that honors the work and career of maestro Antonio López Sáenz, ambassador of Sinaloan art to the world.

At the ceremony the judges of the contest were introduced: Liliana Bandín Gaxiola; teacher Alejandro Mojica Díaz and the architect Victor Manuel López de la Paz, responsible for selecting the winning pieces of the first three places, and for granting honorable mentions and selecting the best work currently exhibited at Casa Haas.

First place went to the piece “Acotar para estratificar la territorialidad” [Limit to stratify territoriality] by artist Tonatiuh Salcedo Rodríguez, originally from Los Mochis, Sinaloa; He presented a three-dimensional piece with a geometric abstraction, endowed with great management of composition and use of light and depth.

The second place was void because the jury, after analyzing a series of elements that were provided, determined that the piece “Vestigios de valor” by Alejandro Castañeda did not meet one of the requirements, not having been previously exhibited during year.

Third place went to the piece “Pareidolia” by Mazatlan artist Miguel Mateo Gutiérrez Tirado, which stood out for the use of his technique of nicotine on gauze, in a curtain style, thus creating a new dimensionality.
The jury decided to also award two honorable mentions to the pieces: “Especie”, by Carlos Flores Zazueta, from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and “Templo del espacio vacío”, by Eduardo Sánchez Encinas, from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, which is part from the series “Desaparición del objeto”.
